Cloud keys stay only in this browser tab's memory. Writa does not add them to your documents, workspace backups, or local writing data. Reloading or closing the page clears the key.
AI is optional
Bring the model
you trust.
Writa works without AI. When you want Rita, connect an OpenAI, Anthropic, or OpenRouter API key, or run a model on your own computer with Ollama.
Start in Writa
One connection.
Four small steps.
- 01
Open the writing room and find Rita beside your page.
- 02
Select Connect model at the top of the Rita panel.
- 03
Choose your provider and enter the exact model name.
- 04
Paste your key, or find an installed Ollama model, then select Use this model.
Your key in Writa
A key opens the door.
It does not enter the draft.
When you press Ask, Writa relays the key, your message, and the context you enabled to the selected provider.
Open Connect model and select Disconnect when you are finished. Never paste a key into your draft or a chat message.
New to APIs?
What is
an API key?
An API key is a private code created by an AI provider. It lets Writa send a request to the model you chose and lets the provider connect that request to your account. It is not your account password, and it does not give Writa access to your provider dashboard.
OpenAI, Anthropic, and OpenRouter each create their own keys. A key from one provider will not work with another.
Paste it only into Writa's labeled API key field. Never put it in a draft, chat message, screenshot, or shared document.
The provider measures API use and charges under its own pricing. Review its usage and spending controls before you begin.
If a key is exposed, revoke it in the provider's dashboard and create a new one. Then replace the old key in Writa.

Use Ollama
with Writa.
Ollama can run a model through the local API on your computer. Writa talks directly to that local service at 127.0.0.1:11434.
Install and start Ollama
Download the app for macOS, Windows, or Linux and leave it running while you use Rita.
Download a local model
Use Ollama's model menu or run this command in a terminal:
ollama run llama3.2Allow the Writa website
Ollama must allow requests from Writa's web address. On macOS, run this command and then restart the Ollama app:
launchctl setenv OLLAMA_ORIGINS "https://wwrita.com"Windows and Linux use the same OLLAMA_ORIGINS value through their normal environment settings.
Connect inside Writa
Choose Ollama · this device, select Find installed models, choose one, and select Use this model.
